Francis Parker School in Goshen celebrates Dolly Parton with a full‑day tribute

Goshen, Ky. – A week after the passing of country‑music legend Dolly Parton, Francis Parker School turned its cafeteria and classrooms into a celebration of the beloved artist. What began as a teacher‑crafted playlist quickly grew into “Dolly Day,” a full‑day event that invited students, faculty and staff to honor Parton’s music and her lifelong commitment to kindness.

From playlist to lunch

School chef Rachael Reigelman, who had been curating a Dolly Parton playlist for the staff room, felt the tribute needed something more tangible. “I thought, let’s do a meal and celebrate Dolly and everything she built in community,” Reigelman said. The menu featured roast pork, chicken and dumplings, green beans and cornbread – a hearty Southern spread meant to bring people together.

Expanding the celebration

When receptionist Mo Stucker heard about the lunch, she asked, “Why are we confining this to lunch?” The question sparked a broader vision. “We thought, why not make the whole day Dolly?” Stucker recalled. Together with other teachers, she organized classroom activities, music‑themed projects and a dress‑up component that encouraged everyone to wear their best Dolly‑inspired outfits.

Students embrace the spirit of giving

Throughout the day, teachers used the occasion to reinforce the values Parton championed: kindness, generosity and a sense of purpose. Reigelman explained that beyond the music, “the philanthropy she did throughout her life and the love she showed everyone is what we’ll always remember.” Students were invited to reflect on how they could emulate that spirit in their own lives, linking the celebration to actionable community service.

Parton’s lasting impact in Kentucky

Parton’s influence reaches far beyond her songs. Her Imagination Library, which operates in all 120 Kentucky counties, has already distributed more than 330 million books to children worldwide, fostering literacy and imagination. The school’s tribute highlighted how a single artist’s commitment to giving can inspire a whole generation of young people.

Community response

Parents and local residents praised the school’s initiative, noting that the event provided a wholesome, family‑friendly way to remember a cultural icon while reinforcing values that align with the community’s faith‑centered, family‑oriented outlook. “It’s wonderful to see our children learning about generosity through someone they love,” said one parent.

Francis Parker School plans to make Dolly Day an annual tradition, using the celebration as a springboard for future service projects and cultural learning opportunities that strengthen the bonds of the Goshen community.
