Argentina’s President Milei Calls for Tougher Sanctions on Falklands Oil Projects

In a televised address, Argentine President Javier Milei declared that the Falkland Islands – known in Argentina as the Malvinas – are “Argentinian, historically and legally” and announced a push for harsher sanctions against oil firms operating near the archipelago.

Sanctions proposal and naval buildup

Milei said the government will seek a law change that would penalize any company providing services to entities involved in hydrocarbon extraction around the islands. He warned that without action, foreign operators could soon “possess the physical capacity to take the oil reserves that lie beneath our waters,” creating an incentive for the United Kingdom to deepen its occupation.

Alongside the sanctions plan, Milei announced additional funding for a new naval base in Tierra del Fuego, Argentina’s southernmost province, to bolster the nation’s geopolitical influence and logistics capabilities.

International context

The announcement follows recent comments by President Donald Trump, who suggested Washington might reconsider its long‑standing strategic ambiguity on Falklands sovereignty. Milei praised the U.S. president, saying the potential shift shows Argentina has a reliable partner aligned with Western values.

Trump, speaking to GB News, avoided a direct answer on whether the United States would come to Britain’s aid in a future conflict over the islands, instead recalling past cooperation and expressing disappointment over perceived British support during the U.S.-led campaign against Iran.

Historical backdrop

The Falklands have been under British control since 1833, and the two nations fought a brief war in 1982 that claimed 645 Argentine and 255 British lives. In a 2013 referendum, island residents voted overwhelmingly – more than 99% – to remain under British rule. Milei dismissed the referendum result, stating the population “does not have a legitimate right to self‑determination” and that any such argument is invalid.

Argentina’s renewed diplomatic push reflects ongoing domestic pressure; the Malvinas issue remains a potent rallying point for Argentine politicians and the public. Earlier this year, Argentine football players displayed a banner reading “the Malvinas are Argentine” after a World Cup semi‑final victory over England.
