France reports 7,000 excess deaths from summer heatwaves, minister says

Paris – French Health Minister Stéphanie Rist told reporters on Friday that the country has experienced an estimated 7,000 excess deaths linked to the severe heatwaves that battered France this summer. The figure covers the period from June 17 through July 2, a time when temperatures repeatedly surged above 35 °C (95 °F) across much of the nation.

Preliminary data and official estimates

The health ministry’s preliminary count builds on an earlier estimate from the national health agency, which had put the excess‑mortality tally for the same period at 5,764. Rist said the higher number reflects additional data that have since been compiled from hospitals, regional health observatories, and civil‑registry offices.

Understanding excess deaths

“Excess deaths represent the number of fatalities above what we would normally expect for this time of year,” Rist explained. “When temperatures climb to extreme levels, vulnerable populations—especially the elderly, those with chronic illnesses, and people without adequate cooling at home—are at heightened risk.”

Public‑health response

The ministry emphasized that the government has taken a series of measures to protect citizens during heat events. These include opening cooling centers in major cities, issuing heat‑alert warnings through the national media, and urging families to check on older relatives and neighbors.

Local authorities have also been instructed to ensure that public facilities such as libraries, community centers, and sports halls remain open longer during heat alerts, providing safe, air‑conditioned spaces for residents.

Looking ahead

Rist noted that a comprehensive report will be released in the coming weeks, offering a full accounting of the mortality impact and an evaluation of the effectiveness of the response measures. The ministry plans to use the findings to refine future heat‑wave preparedness strategies, including better coordination with regional health agencies and expanded public‑awareness campaigns.

Experts warn that climate change is likely to increase the frequency and intensity of heatwaves across Europe, making robust public‑health planning ever more critical. While France’s current efforts aim to mitigate immediate risks, long‑term adaptation will require sustained investment in infrastructure, such as expanding green spaces and improving building insulation.

For now, the French government urges citizens to stay vigilant, stay hydrated, and look out for vulnerable neighbors as the summer heat continues to linger.
