Fort Worth ISD Renames School to Esperanza Elementary Amid Community Input

In a significant decision reflecting community involvement, Fort Worth Independent School District (FWISD) has renamed César Chávez Elementary to Esperanza Elementary. The name, which means ‘hope’ in Spanish, was chosen after extensive community input involving families, students, and staff.

The decision was finalized by the district’s state-appointed board of managers, who voted unanimously to adopt the new name. This change comes after the board ended a student holiday associated with César Chávez, following allegations against him reported by a New York Times investigation.

Community Involvement in Renaming

The renaming process was thorough, with over 500 participants in the initial survey round, contributing 108 comments and over 6,000 ratings. The campus’s site-based decision-making committee recommended the name Esperanza, which was then narrowed down from a list of 15 names to the final choice.

However, the decision was not without debate. Resident Fedencio Medellin proposed naming the school after his brother, Marine Cpl. Jesus Martin Antonio Medellin, a local hero who died in military service. Despite this, the board decided to honor the community’s choice of Esperanza.

Policy and Legal Considerations

The board faced challenges regarding whether the name Esperanza fit the district’s naming policy, which traditionally requires names to be based on recognized pioneers or geographic locations. Despite these concerns, board member Luis Galindo emphasized the importance of honoring the community’s choice, stating, ‘Esperanza means hope. We’re naming an elementary school hope.’

Manager Laurie George suggested suspending the policy for this specific case to respect the community’s wishes. The decision was seen as a step towards rebuilding trust and improving student outcomes under the new state-appointed leadership.

Superintendent Peter Licata announced that funds from property sales would be used to update the school’s signage and complete beautification projects over the summer, aligning with the new name’s hopeful message.
