Fort Wayne Zoo Welcomes Bald Eagles

The Fort Wayne Zoo is preparing to welcome two North American bald eagles, Liberty and Spirit, giving guests a rare chance to see one of the nation’s most recognizable symbols up close.

Conservation Efforts

The first eagle, named Liberty, is expected to make his public debut in the coming weeks as a visiting species in the Zoo’s Australian Adventure exhibit. A second bald eagle, Spirit, is scheduled to arrive later this season. Liberty, like many bald eagles living in professional care, suffered injuries that prevent him from surviving in the wild.

Zoo officials say the eagle will serve as an ambassador for the species, helping visitors learn about wildlife conservation and the remarkable recovery of bald eagle populations in the United States. The timing of Liberty’s arrival is especially significant, as the eagle is expected to make his first public appearance just before the nation’s 250th birthday celebration on July 4.

According to Fort Wayne Zoo Executive Director and CEO Rick Schuiteman, “These remarkable birds give us a powerful opportunity to connect our guests with conservation stories both past and present.”

Once nearly extinct in the lower 48 states due to habitat loss, hunting, and the widespread use of DDT, bald eagles have made a dramatic recovery thanks to conservation efforts, legal protections, and habitat restoration.

The Zoo plans to host a ribbon-cutting ceremony on July 1 to celebrate Liberty’s arrival and the conservation story both eagles represent. Guests are encouraged to follow the Zoo’s website and social media channels for updates on Liberty’s public debut.
