The US State Department is trying to help the mother of Cape Verde’s goalkeeper, Vozinha, to attend the World Cup in the United States. Vozinha mentioned after Cape Verde’s draw with Spain that his mother was unable to attend the match due to visa issues.
A State Department official stated that there was no record of a visa request for Vozinha’s mother and that the bond requirement is waived for relatives of players. The official also noted that the Department is actively reaching out to Vozinha’s family to assist with visa services.
Vozinha’s mother does not currently have an active passport and is in the process of obtaining one. The State Department’s website states that the bond requirement will be waived for athletes and team members, including immediate relatives, who are nationals of countries competing in the FIFA World Cup 2026 and demonstrate that they meet all requirements for the visa.
Vozinha, a 40-year-old who plays in the Portuguese second division, made seven saves against Spain, stifling the tournament favorites in his country’s first World Cup match. Cape Verde next takes the field against Uruguay in Miami.
