A 35-year-old man faces felony charges after an armed standoff at a residence on East Emerald Lane in Citrus County, Florida, on Thursday afternoon.

Incident Details

Deputies were dispatched to the home shortly after 2 p.m. on August 13 following reports of an erratic and violent individual armed with a sword. Upon arrival, law enforcement spoke with a victim on the scene who stated that Joshua Batchelor had threatened her while armed with both a sword and a baseball bat.

The victim also told investigators that Batchelor had been smoking methamphetamine from a pipe inside the house. Deputies observed Batchelor pacing through the interior of the home while holding an object. Because weapons were present and violent threats had been reported, the sheriff’s office brought in additional patrol units, crisis negotiators, and a SWAT team.

While negotiators tried to establish contact with Batchelor, SWAT personnel secured the perimeter to protect the victim, neighboring residents, and responding officers. SWAT operators eventually entered the residence and took Batchelor into custody without further incident.

According to investigators, the victim told deputies that Batchelor threatened to kill her while holding the sword and subsequently threw the weapon at her. Based on those statements, deputies found probable cause to charge Batchelor with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon.

Response and Aftermath

Sheriff David Vincent credited the multi-unit operation for resolving the standoff safely. “This incident is a clear example of how our specialized teams, patrol deputies, and negotiators work together to bring dangerous situations to a safe resolution,” Vincent said. “Their professionalism and teamwork ensured no one else was harmed during a volatile and unpredictable encounter.”
