Fever outlast Fire 112-98 as Clark delivers triple-double in Portland

The Indiana Fever handed the Portland Fire a 112-98 defeat at Moda Center on Friday, July 31, powered by a dominant all-around performance that was difficult for the home side to answer from start to finish.

Caitlin Clark was the story of the night, recording a triple-double with 26 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists — a stat line that underscored just how thoroughly she controlled the game on both ends of the floor. Her ability to score, distribute, and crash the boards gave Indiana a dimension that Portland simply could not neutralize over 40 minutes.

For the Fire, Bridget Carleton matched Clark’s scoring output with a game-high-tying 26 points, providing Portland’s most consistent offensive threat throughout the contest. Carla Leite was impressive in the playmaking department, finishing with 12 assists to lead all players in that category, while Karlie Samuelson paced Portland on the glass with 4 rebounds. Despite those individual contributions, the Fire could not generate enough collective resistance to slow Indiana’s attack.

The Fever’s efficiency from the field told much of the story. Indiana connected on 36 of 68 field goal attempts for a 53 percent shooting clip — a mark that kept Portland’s defense perpetually scrambling. The Fever also knocked down 10 three-pointers on 29 attempts, converting at a 34 percent rate, and were especially lethal at the free-throw line, going 30-for-34 for an 88 percent conversion rate. Those 30 made free throws represented a significant source of points that the Fire struggled to offset.

Indiana’s defensive pressure was equally impactful. The Fever recorded 14 steals on the night, a figure that disrupted Portland’s offensive rhythm and led directly to transition opportunities. The Fire’s inability to protect the ball against Indiana’s aggressive perimeter defense proved costly across all four quarters.

On the boards, Indiana finished with 30 total rebounds — including 8 on the offensive glass — giving the Fever multiple second-chance opportunities that they converted into points. The 22 defensive rebounds Indiana collected limited Portland’s own offensive rebounding chances and helped the visitors control possession throughout the game.

Indiana also moved the ball with purpose, tallying 24 assists as a team, a number that reflected the ball movement and unselfishness that characterized their offensive approach. Clark’s 10 assists were the engine of that distribution, but the Fever clearly benefited from a cohesive team effort in creating open looks.

Portland’s Leite deserves credit for keeping the Fire competitive in the assist column, but 12 dimes were not enough to bridge a 14-point final deficit. The Fire were unable to generate the stops or the sustained offensive runs necessary to threaten Indiana’s lead in the game’s critical stretches.

The final margin of 112-98 reflects a Fever squad that is playing with confidence and executing at a high level. Clark’s triple-double performance at Moda Center will stand as one of the signature moments of Indiana’s road schedule, and the result is a significant road victory for a Fever team continuing to assert itself in the WNBA landscape.
