Federal Way Officials Assist Ukrainian Woman’s Visit Amid Immigration Uncertainty

In a heartwarming display of community support, officials in Federal Way, Washington, stepped up to assist Iryna Kornychuk, a Ukrainian immigrant, in visiting her terminally ill mother in Ukraine. Kornychuk, who moved to Federal Way with her husband through the Uniting for Ukraine program, faced significant hurdles due to immigration policy changes and delays.

Community Support in Action

Fearing she might not be able to return to the United States, Kornychuk sought help from Federal Way Mayor Jim Ferrell, State Rep. Kristine Reeves, and the President of the Ukraine Association. Their prompt response with letters of support enabled her to secure an appointment and travel to Ukraine within 30 days.

Vitaliy Piekhotin, a local community leader, emphasized the power of local leadership, noting how Mayor Ferrell’s letters have previously helped him navigate military checkpoints in Ukraine. Piekhotin, who has made numerous trips to his homeland, recently returned with a letter of appreciation from the mayor of Rivne, Ukraine, acknowledging Federal Way’s support and the sister city relationship.

Immigration Challenges and Community Resilience

The Kornychuks, like many in the Ukrainian community, have been affected by the suspension of asylum application processing. This uncertainty has left many unable to work and in limbo, awaiting document renewals. Despite these challenges, Kornychuk expressed gratitude for the everyday support from the American people.

In Federal Way City Hall, the Ukrainian flag and cultural artifacts, including a traditional embroidered dress and a transformed artillery shell, symbolize the community’s connection to Ukraine. However, a recent ordinance prevents the Ukrainian flag from being flown outside City Hall, reflecting ongoing debates about cultural representation.

Overseas, Kornychuk participated in Ukraine’s national minute of silence, honoring those fighting on the front lines, including her son. Piekhotin shared his experiences from the front lines through social media, highlighting the global impact of military interventions and the role of U.S. taxpayers in supporting these efforts.
