Five Chicago Officers Injured by Car During Teen Gathering

In Chicago’s Near West Side, five police officers were injured early Sunday morning when a car struck them while they were responding to a large gathering of teenagers. The incident occurred around 3:20 a.m. near the intersection of West Roosevelt Road and South Loomis Street, where officers were attempting to disperse a crowd that had gathered for a late-night prom celebration.

The vehicle, a blue car, collided with the officers before coming to a halt after hitting a fence, pole, and a police car. The injured officers are currently in fair condition, according to police reports.

An 18-year-old man was taken into custody following the incident, and a weapon was recovered from his vehicle. As of Monday afternoon, no charges have been announced. It remains unclear if the man was directly involved with the gathering, which took place near the Brooks Homes, a public housing complex.

Community and Official Reactions

The gathering, described by Alderman Jim Gardiner as a ‘teen takeover,’ has sparked discussions about the nature of such events, which are sometimes organized via social media and can lead to violence. However, Alderman Jason Ervin, who represents the area, noted that this particular event was unexpected and not typical of usual gatherings in the area.

Mayor Brandon Johnson condemned the unauthorized gathering and emphasized the importance of parental responsibility. Johnson has been a vocal opponent of a ‘snap curfew’ policy, which would allow police to disperse crowds with minimal notice. Instead, a compromise was reached to enhance existing police powers to manage such gatherings.

Johnson stated, ‘I continue to call on parents and guardians to know where their children are and to help ensure they are safe and accounted for.’ He also stressed the need for accountability among those involved in the incident, while highlighting efforts to create safe spaces and opportunities for young people.

In a related incident, a 19-year-old man was shot in the leg nearby shortly after the officers were struck, though it is unclear if the shooting is connected to the gathering.
