Investigation and Standoff
The suspect, 43-year-old Edward Pyne from Salem, New Hampshire, was identified by the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office. Pyne had a criminal history, but the motive behind the shooting is still unknown. A witness followed Pyne’s car, helping state police track it down to Interstate 495, where a lengthy standoff ensued. Pyne was found dead after the standoff, with authorities suspecting a suicide.
The Berlin police initially reported an assault in progress at the shopping center, with possible gunshots fired. They asked the public to avoid the area during the investigation, which was conducted with the assistance of the Massachusetts State Police.
