It’s been 10 years since Morgan Angerbauer, a 20-year-old diabetic, died in the Bi-State Jail in Texarkana, Texas, due to complications from her condition. Her family claims that negligence led to her death, as a nurse and jail staff refused to treat her despite knowing she was diabetic.
Seeking Justice and Reform
Morgan’s parents, Andy Houser and Jennifer Creamer, have spent the last decade fighting for jail reform. They believe that if the staff had been properly trained and equipped to handle medical emergencies, their daughter would still be alive. The family has testified before Texas lawmakers about the need for correctional officers to be medically certified before starting their jobs.
Although some changes have been made, such as the requirement for staff to scan identification bracelets during routine welfare checks, the family believes there is still more work to be done. They hope that their efforts will lead to the passage of laws that will improve jail standards and ensure that inmates receive proper care.
