Lincoln, Neb. – This weekend the Fallbrook YMCA marked the 10th anniversary of its annual youth triathlon, a community‑focused event that encourages children to challenge themselves and grow in confidence.
Kids push themselves, families cheer them on
Roughly 100 youngsters took part, completing a swim, a bike ride and a run. “It was fun, but it was hard,” participant Raina Wilcox said, adding that she was proud of herself even if she wished she had done better. The race is untimed, so the emphasis is on personal improvement rather than competition.
Parents, siblings and volunteers lined the course, cheering each leg and helping participants transition between the swim, bike and run. “The kids are really supportive of one another. They encourage each other, they cheer each other on,” YMCA Executive Director Emmalie Wilcox noted.
A decade of growth and confidence
Some of the competitors have been with the program since they were five years old. “Now here they are. It’s really been exciting to see growth and confidence build over time,” Emmalie Wilcox said.
Because the event is untimed, children are encouraged to return the following year and try to beat their own previous time, fostering a habit of self‑improvement and perseverance.
Fundraising for Open Doors
The triathlon also serves as a fundraiser for the YMCA’s Open Doors annual campaign. Fees paid by participants and contributions from local sponsors support the Open Doors financial assistance program, which helps kids, families, adults and seniors access YMCA programs and services.
Community leaders praised the event for promoting healthy activity, family involvement, and charitable giving. “Events like this strengthen our neighborhoods and give our youth the tools they need to thrive,” said a local council member who attended the race.
As the Fallbrook YMCA looks ahead, organizers hope the tradition will continue to inspire confidence, fitness, and generosity among Lincoln’s families for many years to come.
