The Atlanta Falcons’ quarterback competition has taken an early hit as Tua Tagovailoa suffered a ‘flare-up’ of an undisclosed injury in training camp. New head coach Kevin Stefanski told reporters that Tagovailoa had to be sidelined, but he believes the quarterback will return to practice ‘sooner rather than later.’
Quarterback Depth Chart
With Michael Penix Jr. still recovering from a torn ACL, the Falcons signed veteran backup Cooper Rush to bolster the quarterback depth chart. The team released Trevor Siemian earlier, and after Tagovailoa’s injury, undrafted rookie free agent Jack Strand was the only healthy quarterback on the depth chart.
Penix, who had four season-ending injuries during his college days, is being cautious with his recovery. ‘I have a long injury history,’ he said. ‘The last thing I want to do is rush back just to get back on the field.’ The Falcons will be an interesting team to watch this season, not just because of the quarterback dilemma, but also with their new regime, which includes legendary quarterback Matt Ryan as team president of football.
