Fairfax County Park Authority is inviting families, history buffs, and anyone interested in the county’s past to join a series of free events this fall. As part of Fairfax250 – the community’s celebration of America’s 250th anniversary – the authority will host guided tours at seven historic locations on three September Sundays and launch a self‑guided Adventure Patch that lets participants explore at their own pace.
Free guided tours on September Sundays
Starting September 13, the September Sundays Free Tour Series will bring knowledgeable guides to the following sites:
- Colvin Run Mill
- Ellanor C. Lawrence Park
- Green Spring Gardens
- Historic Huntley
- Sully Historic Site
- The Spindle Sears House in Historic Centreville – a 1935 Sears, Roebuck & Co. kit home
- Frying Pan Spring Meeting House at Frying Pan Farm Park – a structure dating back more than 200 years
Each tour highlights a different facet of Fairfax County’s story, from working mills and historic homes to archaeology and farm life. Visitors will also hear narratives about freedom seekers and other individuals whose lives connect the county to the broader national story.
Self‑guided Fairfax250 Adventure Patch
For those who prefer flexibility, the Fairfax250 Adventure Patch offers a self‑directed experience across the county. Participants complete six activities grouped around three themes: learning, sharing, and doing. Upon finishing the challenge, volunteers receive a commemorative Fairfax250 patch as a token of their participation.
How to join
Although the tours are free, space is limited. Residents must register in advance through the Fairfax250 website. The Adventure Patch does not require registration, but participants should review the activity list online to plan their route.
Support and sponsorship
The September Sundays Free Tour Series and the Fairfax250 Adventure Patch are both sponsored by the Fairfax250 Commission, underscoring the county’s commitment to preserving and sharing its rich heritage with the public.
More information, including registration details for the guided tours and a full description of the Adventure Patch activities, is available on the official Fairfax250 webpage.
