Arsenal extends lead in Premier League as Liverpool and Chelsea stumble

Arsenal solidified its position atop the Premier League on Saturday, pulling three points clear after a 2‑0 victory at the Stadium of Light. Mid‑second‑half substitute Bruno Guimarães, a former Newcastle player, delivered a long‑range strike into the top corner in the 58th minute, then celebrated by cupping his ears toward the Sunderland crowd.

Guimarães, who joined Arsenal from Newcastle during the summer, was well aware of the significance of scoring against his former rivals. His goal came just two minutes after Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya saved a penalty from Sunderland’s Enzo Le Fee. The Gunners sealed the win when Bukayo Saka converted a penalty in the seventh minute of added time after Chelsea’s Reinildo Mandava was sent off for a foul in the box.

Manchester City remains within striking distance

Manchester City sits three points behind Arsenal in second place and will face Manchester United on Sunday, keeping the title race tightly contested.

Liverpool’s high‑cost attack falters at home

Liverpool, having spent over half a billion dollars on new forwards in the past two seasons, were held to a goalless draw by Fulham at Anfield. British record signing Alexander Isak ($170 million) and Bradley Barcola ($166 million) could not find a breakthrough, and the match marked Liverpool’s third home draw of the campaign.

Goalkeeper Alisson described the performance bluntly: “Collectively we didn’t play well. Many things we tried to do, we couldn’t do well.” Manager Andoni Iraola, still adapting to his first season after success at Bournemouth, added, “When you draw, especially at home, you can’t be happy. We lacked freshness and offensive execution.”

Chelsea’s defensive woes continue

Chelsea’s fragile defense was exposed again as newly promoted Hull forced a 2‑2 draw at Stamford Bridge. The Gunners have conceded at least two goals in each of their league matches and 12 goals in six games across all competitions. Their only clean sheet came against third‑division Luton in the League Cup.

Coach Xabi Alonso acknowledged the need for improvement: “We can do better. We got what we deserved. We need to be more solid and controlled. This is the process, and I’m confident we’ll tighten up in the coming months.”

Tottenham’s goal drought persists

Tottenham Hotspur remained winless and goalless after a 0‑0 draw with Everton, extending a six‑hour goal‑less stretch despite a $400 million summer spending spree that included forwards Omar Marmoush and Savio.

Aston Villa’s shaky start

Aston Villa continued its difficult opening to the season with a 2‑1 loss at home to Nottingham Forest. After a promising Champions League win, Villa’s recent departures have taken a toll, and manager Unai Emery lamented the second‑half performance, saying, “We started so poorly, they scored and created chances. We lost because we decided to lose.”

Other league action

In other matches, Ipswich secured a 3‑2 victory over Crystal Palace thanks to a 90th‑minute winner from substitute Zian Flemming. Brentford drew 2‑2 with Bournemouth, while Kevin Schade netted a brace for Brentford.

The Premier League’s early weeks have already produced a clear hierarchy, with Arsenal leading, Manchester City close behind, and traditional powerhouses Liverpool and Chelsea facing setbacks that could shape the rest of the campaign.
