A national security expert who fled communist Cuba in the 1970s is warning of a ‘vicious cycle’ in American politics that could lead to communists serving in Congress. Mike Gonzalez, a senior fellow at the Heritage Foundation, said the socialist threat is real and likened it to a ‘takeover of a host body, the Democratic Party.’ Gonzalez predicted that under the current political environment, ‘we’re going to get communists in double digits in the House of Representatives at least, there’s no doubt of that.’
Socialist Candidates’ Success
Over the past year, socialist candidates have seen significant success in various elections across the US. New York City elected a socialist mayor, and three socialist congressional candidates endorsed by the mayor won their primaries. Similarly, Seattle elected a socialist mayor, and a socialist candidate in Colorado defeated a 15-term Democratic incumbent. Gonzalez pointed out that to the authors of the communist manifesto, Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, there was no difference between socialism and communism, and that these socialist candidates are essentially communists.
According to Gonzalez, the success of socialist candidates can be attributed to several factors, including the breakdown of immigrants assimilating to American culture, increased hatred of the US, and White guilt combined with a real affordability crisis in cities like New York. Gonzalez also noted that many of these votes come from young, White, suburban voters who feel guilty about various issues and are drawn to socialist promises of handouts, such as free tuition and public-run grocery stores.
A Threat to the American Way of Life
Neetu Arnold, a policy analyst at the Manhattan Institute, emphasized that the socialist trend is not isolated to cities like New York but is becoming increasingly prevalent across the US. Arnold warned that socialist policies are a threat to the American way of life, which values merit, wealth, and the ability to move upward in society. Arnold, a naturalized US citizen, hopes that both sides of the political aisle recognize the threat posed by socialist policies and take it seriously.
