Enrique Peña Nieto is a former Mexican president. He was born on July 20, 1966, in Atlacomulco, Mexico. His father, Gilberto Enrique Peña del Mazo, was an engineer, and his mother, Maria del Perpetuo Socorro Ofelia Nieto Sanchez, was a teacher.
Early Life and Education
Peña Nieto attended school in the United States for a year to learn English in 1978. He later studied at the Universidad Panamericana, where he earned a B.A. in 1989, and at the Instituto Tecnológico de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey, where he earned an M.A. in 1991.
Peña Nieto is a Roman Catholic. He has been married twice, first to Monica Pretelini Saenz from 1994 until her death in 2007, and then to Angélica Rivera from 2010 until their divorce in 2019. He has several children from these marriages and from relationships outside of marriage.
Political Career
Peña Nieto began his political career in 1984 when he became a member of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI). He worked for his cousin, Arturo Montiel Rojas, who was the governor of the State of Mexico, starting in 1999. Peña Nieto held various positions, including secretary of administration for the State of Mexico from 2000 to 2002 and representative of the 13th District of the State of Mexico from 2003 to 2004.
He served as the governor of the State of Mexico from 2005 to 2011. In 2012, Peña Nieto won the presidential election with about 38% of the vote. He was sworn in as president of Mexico on December 1, 2012.
During his presidency, Peña Nieto faced several challenges, including protests over the disappearance of 43 students in Guerrero state and allegations of corruption. He also signed a decree legalizing marijuana and cannabis derivatives for medicinal use nationwide in 2017.
Post-Presidency
Peña Nieto left office on December 1, 2018, and was succeeded by Andrés Manuel López Obrador. After leaving office, Peña Nieto has faced investigations into possible corruption and money laundering. In 2022, Mexico’s Financial Intelligence Unit announced an investigation into possible illegal money transfers made by Peña Nieto while he was in office.
