Heavy rainfall over the Fourth of July weekend caused flooding in Elkhart, leaving homeowners to deal with the aftermath. Hillary Chidester, an Elkhart resident, returned home to find her basement filled with floodwater, soaked carpet, and a mildew smell.
Flood Damage and Recovery
Chidester had been out of town in Chicago and was unaware of the flooding until she returned home on Sunday. She described the damage as more than just water, with the smell of mildew being a major concern. Family and friends have stepped in to help with the cleanup, easing some of the burden.
A neighbor and friend, Aubrey Beem, is also dealing with similar damage after being out of town. Beem described major losses in the basement, including a tipped-over freezer and destroyed meat. The family is looking for outside help, including possible FEMA assistance.
