Hundreds of stray animals have been turned into Southern California shelters after the July Fourth fireworks, as warned by local animal experts. The incessant fireworks startled many pets, prompting them to escape their homes.
Shelter Statistics
Los Angeles County reported 189 stray animals, including 118 dogs, 36 cats, and 35 other animals. Riverside County saw a significant number of animals admitted to its shelters, with 360 pets already entered between July 1 and July 5. Among these, 40 were picked up by their owners.
Pasadena Humane took in about 30 animals, mostly dogs, which officials believe were lost due to fireworks. The city of Mission Viejo impounded six dogs, with four already reclaimed by their owners. The San Diego Humane Society reported 127 lost pets, with only 22 reclaimed.
Pet owners are advised to take precautions to prevent their animals from escaping during fireworks. If a pet is lost, owners should contact local shelters immediately to report the missing animal and visit the shelter in person to search for their pet.
