As the August 18 primary election approaches, Oil City News is introducing candidate questionnaires to help voters make informed decisions at the ballot box. Steve Harshman, a candidate for Wyoming superintendent of public instruction, shared his thoughts on the most crucial challenges facing his constituents and how he plans to address them.
Challenges Facing Wyoming Constituents
Harshman noted that Wyoming is blessed with abundance, but also faces challenges such as the escalating cost of living, healthcare access, and young people leaving the state. He emphasized the importance of addressing these issues to ensure a bright future for Wyoming’s children.
As a member of the State Loan and Investment Board, Harshman plans to continue his work to grow investments, invest in communities, and build infrastructure to lower housing costs. He also mentioned his efforts to train Physician Assistants in the state to produce more caregivers in communities.
Qualifications and Experience
Harshman highlighted his qualifications and experience, including being born and raised in Natrona County, working on an oil rig and a ranch, and serving as a lifelong teacher and coach. He also mentioned his experience in the Wyoming Legislature, where he protected rights, balanced budgets, and kept taxes low.
Harshman emphasized the importance of unlocking the potential of every child and working together to achieve this goal. He noted that Wyoming has the highest percentage of kids enrolled in public schools and that the state’s 4th-grade reading scores are among the best in the nation.
