It’s Elder Abuse Awareness Month and advocates are encouraging the public to recognize the warning signs and report suspected cases in Shreveport, Louisiana.
Elder Abuse Statistics
Tamika Lewis with the Governor’s Office of Elderly Affairs says elder abuse remains a significant but often underreported problem. Abuse can include physical, sexual, emotional, or verbal mistreatment, as well as neglect and financial exploitation.
Lewis said the agency has received more than 5,500 reports this fiscal year and expects that many more cases go unreported. Anyone who suspects elder abuse can contact the Governor’s Office of Elderly Affairs at (833) 577-6532.
