As the summer heat sets in, El Paso Animal Services is taking steps to keep the dogs in their care cool and comfortable. The shelter has implemented measures such as turning on misters for outdoor kennels and walking dogs during the cooler parts of the day.
Volunteer Efforts
Longtime volunteer Colette Bowar is at the shelter seven days a week, helping to walk the dogs and take them to a park. She believes that taking the dogs out for a few minutes, especially during the summertime, helps them de-stress and makes them happier.
The shelter also receives help from volunteers who make chilled treats for the dogs, including peanut butter on a frozen frisbee. According to a shelter official, their freezers work overtime during the summertime to keep the pets as comfortable as possible.
