ECB Governor Pereira warns inflation could broaden despite recent slowdown

Euro zone policymakers are keeping a close watch on price pressures after Portuguese central bank chief Álvaro Santos Pereira told a gathering at the Portuguese embassy in London that inflation is not yet broadening as it did in 2022.

Current inflation dynamics

“Inflation is not spreading or is not broadening as fast as it happened in 2022,” Pereira said at the European Economics and Financial Centre event. He added that the slower spread does not mean a broader rise cannot occur, emphasizing the need for vigilance over the coming months.

Key risks on the agenda

The governor highlighted two emerging risks. First, a recent surge in natural gas prices is catching the attention of central bankers, given its potential to lift energy‑related costs across the bloc. Second, the rapid expansion of artificial‑intelligence technologies and their impact on global growth and price stability represent a new “shock” that policymakers must grapple with.

“There’s a lot of risks that certainly have risen in the last few months,” Pereira said, underscoring the complexity of the inflation outlook.

Monetary policy response

In response to persistent price pressures, the European Central Bank raised euro‑zone interest rates last week for the second time this year. Financial markets are now pricing in at least three more rate hikes over the next twelve months, reflecting expectations that the ECB will continue to act decisively if inflation shows signs of broadening.

Implications for households and businesses

While the current slowdown in inflation spread offers some relief, higher energy costs and the uncertainty surrounding AI‑driven productivity gains could weigh on household budgets and corporate planning. The ECB’s monitoring framework aims to balance the need for price stability with the goal of supporting sustainable economic growth.

Looking ahead

Policymakers will assess data on gas prices, AI‑related economic activity, and broader price trends in the coming months. Their decisions will shape the euro zone’s monetary stance and influence the cost of borrowing for consumers and businesses alike.
