A personal health journey has grown into a business focused on helping families find cleaner alternatives for their homes and bodies in Mount Pleasant, Texas. Ruby + Begonia, located in the heart of the city, was created by Sabrina Vaseleck after her mother was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer and became increasingly sensitive to strong fragrances and harsh ingredients.
A Mother’s Influence
The business is described as a healthier, cleaner home and body product store with the feel of a luxury apothecary. Its name comes from Vaseleck’s mother’s nickname, Ruby Begonia. During chemotherapy and immunotherapy, Vaseleck’s mother told her she could no longer tolerate the strong smells from candles, plug-in air fresheners and other products in Sabrina’s home.
Vaseleck made her first product while her mother was still alive and was able to try it with her. After her mother’s death, Vaseleck said she felt compelled to continue building the business as a way to honor her mother’s influence. Ruby + Begonia offers a variety of products made with cleaner, non-toxic ingredients, all of which are made locally in Mount Pleasant.
Local Production
Vaseleck said keeping production local is important because it allows her to know exactly what goes into every product. The store’s atmosphere is also designed to reflect Vaseleck’s mother, with bright colors and a focus on joy. The business aims to provide a welcoming space for families to find healthier alternatives for their homes and bodies.
