A 54-year-old Eagle Lake woman died Friday afternoon following a two-vehicle collision on Ronald Reagan Parkway near Davenport, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.
Collision Details
Emergency crews responded to the crash near Portofino Way at approximately 12:16 p.m. First responders with the sheriff’s office and Polk County Fire Rescue located both vehicles stopped on opposite sides of the road, forcing a full shutdown of all eastbound and westbound lanes.
Investigators said both vehicles were traveling westbound in the inside lane prior to the crash. According to witness statements and evidence collected at the scene, a 2008 Nissan Pathfinder attempted to shift into the outside lane before suddenly swerving back to the left, striking the side of a 2022 GMC Terrain.
The collision caused the vehicles to deflect off each other before colliding a second time and separating. The Pathfinder then traveled across the roadway and hit an oak tree head-on on the north side of the street. The GMC Terrain also struck an oak tree head-on on the south side of the road.
Both drivers were transported to nearby hospitals. The driver of the GMC Terrain suffered severe head trauma and died shortly after arriving at the medical facility. Her identity has not yet been released.
The driver of the Pathfinder, a 31-year-old man from Haiti, was treated for minor injuries and is being held for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
