Duval County voters turned out at a modest 23% for the August 18 primary, according to the supervisor of elections website. The turnout rate was slightly higher than the 19% seen in the 2024 primaries but still below the 29% recorded in 2022.

Voter participation by party

Registered Democrats made up roughly half of the county’s electorate and 28% of them voted, while 29% of registered Republicans cast a ballot. In total, 150,890 ballots were cast by mail, in‑person, or during early voting, out of 645,955 active eligible voters.

Democratic primary results

In the race for the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate, Jacksonville resident and state representative Angie Nixon secured an overwhelming majority of the county’s Democratic votes. Nixon received about 80% of the Democratic ballot, including early and mail‑in voters, while former National Security Council aide Alex Vindman captured the remainder.

The margin was evident across the county’s 159 precincts. Only six precincts gave a majority to Vindman. In Precinct 1005 (Harborview), Nixon earned 1,404 votes to Vindman’s 52, a 96% share. Precinct 212 on Black Hammock Island Park split evenly, with 14 votes for each candidate. Precinct 310, located west of San Pablo Boulevard, leaned toward Vindman with 54% of its 346 votes.

Implications for the general election

Nixon’s strong showing positions her to face incumbent Republican Governor (U.S. Senate) Ashley Moody in the November general election. The county’s results mirror statewide trends, where Nixon defeated Vindman 56% to 44% and performed well in most of Florida’s major metropolitan areas.

While overall voter participation remained modest, the primary highlighted the continued partisan balance in Duval County and the decisive preference of Democratic voters for Nixon’s progressive platform.
