Durham welcomes new police chief Stephanie Mardis at DPAC ceremony

Durham residents will gather this Friday morning at the Durham Performing Arts Center to formally welcome Stephanie Mardis as the city’s new police chief. The swearing‑in ceremony is scheduled for 10 a.m., marking the culmination of Mardis’s transition into the role that began on Sept. 8.

Veteran law‑enforcement leader

Mardis arrives with more than 24 years of experience in law enforcement, most recently serving as the assistant chief for the Greensboro Police Department. Her extensive background includes leadership positions in patrol, investigations, and community‑policing initiatives, giving her a broad perspective on the challenges facing Durham’s police force.

Community‑focused priorities

In a pre‑appointment interview with WRAL News, Mardis emphasized that her top priority is to work hand‑in‑hand with Durham’s neighborhoods to reduce violence. She described accountability as a shared responsibility, stating, “I hold myself accountable, and in this agency we will hold our staff accountable. We’ll also hold the community accountable. Accountability is a shared experience.”

Crime trends shaping the department’s focus

Durham’s recent crime statistics underscore the urgency of Mardis’s mission. The city’s homicide rate remains roughly double the state and national averages. During the first quarter of 2026, violent crime—including homicide, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault—rose 4.6 % compared with the same period in 2025. Conversely, property crime such as burglary, larceny, and motor‑vehicle theft fell 6.1 % over the same timeframe.

These mixed trends highlight both progress and persistent challenges. While the decline in property offenses suggests effective prevention measures, the uptick in violent incidents calls for targeted strategies that balance enforcement with community outreach.

Looking ahead

Mardis said she will take a “hard look” at the department’s operations, resources, and community relationships. She plans to convene regular town‑hall meetings, expand neighborhood liaison programs, and strengthen partnerships with local faith‑based and civic organizations. By fostering open dialogue, she aims to build trust and ensure that policing aligns with the values of Durham’s families.

The city’s former chief, Patrice Andrews, retired in May after a 25‑year tenure, leaving a legacy of professional growth and community engagement. Mardis inherits a department poised to continue that tradition while adapting to evolving public‑safety needs.

What residents can expect

Community members are encouraged to attend the swearing‑in ceremony and upcoming public forums. The police department will also roll out new accountability dashboards, allowing citizens to track response times, clearance rates, and other performance metrics. These tools are intended to promote transparency and reinforce the department’s commitment to serving Durham’s families.

As Durham moves forward, the partnership between the police chief, her officers, and the community will be central to creating a safer, more resilient city for all residents.
