Paddle, Pedal, or Simply Wander: Why the C&O Canal’s City Cousin — the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail — Deserves Your Whole Afternoon

Most visitors to Washington D.C. spend their days on the Mall, darting between monuments and museums, rarely venturing east of the Capitol. That is entirely understandable — and entirely their loss. Because just a short distance away, hugging the banks of the Anacostia River, a long, graceful multi-use trail unfolds through neighborhoods that are finally getting the recognition they have always deserved. The Anacostia Riverwalk Trail is not a secret, exactly, but it might as well be one for the number of tourists who overlook it entirely.

The trail stretches roughly nineteen miles in total, connecting a string of parks, green spaces, and cultural landmarks along both the east and west banks of the Anacostia. You can pick it up from several entry points — near the Navy Yard Metro station on the Capitol Riverfront side is one of the easiest, with good signage, a wide paved surface, and a handful of coffee shops and eateries just steps away for a pre-walk fuel-up. Within minutes of setting off, the downtown skyline recedes behind you and the river opens up, broad and surprisingly beautiful in the morning light.

On a weekday morning, the trail has a wonderful rhythm to it. Cyclists glide past in ones and twos. Joggers nod as they pass. Dog walkers linger near the water’s edge. There is none of the elbow-jostling you get on the National Mall’s busiest stretches — just genuine, unhurried Washington going about its day. On weekends, things pick up pleasantly, especially near the Yards Park section, where outdoor seating, public art installations, and a dancing fountain make it feel like a neighborhood block party that never quite ends.

One of the trail’s most rewarding segments runs south toward Anacostia Park itself, a sprawling 1,200-acre green space that most tourists simply never find. Here you will encounter open fields, picnic pavilions, and a real sense of the river as a living thing rather than just a backdrop. The National Park Service maintains this corridor beautifully, and seasonal wildflowers line the path from late spring through early autumn.

Continuing south or crossing over the Douglass Bridge brings you into the Anacostia neighborhood proper, where the trail connects to the grounds near Frederick Douglass’s former home at Cedar Hill — a visit worth combining if you have the afternoon. The juxtaposition of the quiet riverbank, the historic row houses climbing the hillside, and the distant glitter of downtown creates a distinctly D.C. tableau you simply cannot photograph from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.

Bike rentals through Capital Bikeshare are available at multiple docking stations along the route, making it easy to cover a long stretch without much planning. Water fountains and restroom facilities are reasonably well spaced, particularly in the Yards Park and Anacostia Park sections. Wear comfortable shoes regardless, because once you start, you will not want to stop.

Washington is a city that rewards the curious traveler who steps slightly off the prescribed path. The Anacostia Riverwalk Trail is the best proof of that I can offer. Give it a full afternoon, and come back wondering why it took you so long.
