A teenage couple in Durham is facing charges for harming a newborn after the woman allegedly took abortion pills in her third trimester. Syeisha Johnson, 18, and Elijah Speight, 19, are facing charges after Johnson allegedly took the abortion medication Mifespristone.
Incident Details
According to newly released arrest warrants and search warrants, Durham Firefighters and Police responded to a home in Durham on July 29 in reference to a child born prematurely. They located the child in a toilet in the residence. First responders found the child with a pulse and transported it to a local hospital.
Search warrants indicate Johnson learned she was 20 weeks pregnant in June. The search warrant indicates Johnson ordered the medication from Virginia and that the medication is used to end pregnancies less than 70 days in duration. Speight told investigators that Johnson allegedly took the medication a few days before July 29.
Johnson faces 3 charges for child abuse, assault with a deadly weapon, intent to kill and assault inflicting serious bodily injury on an unborn child weighing less than 2,500 grams, which is equivalent to roughly 5.5 pounds.
