The Connellsville Area School District gathered Wednesday night for a groundbreaking ceremony at Dunbar Elementary School, signaling the start of an $11 million renovation that will modernize the decades‑old building and improve daily life for students, staff, and families.
Why the project matters
Superintendent Richard Evans, a 1980s alumnus of Dunbar, said the school has long served the community but has not seen a major upgrade since his own school days. “After decades without a major renovation, we’re making a significant investment in the future of this building, and more importantly, the students and staff who walk through its doors every day,” Evans explained.
First‑phase improvements
The initial phase, scheduled to begin within the next month, will address essential infrastructure and safety. Upgrades include new electrical, heating, and plumbing systems; a re‑designed front parking lot and driveway to improve traffic flow; outdoor lighting; and solid doors to replace the existing exterior glass doors. Classrooms will gain new lockers, and former storage rooms will be converted into additional learning spaces with new windows.
Playground for all children
One of the most visible additions is a new, all‑inclusive playground designed for every student, including those with special needs. Facilities committee head Bob Renzi called the playground “long overdue.” Evans added, “Every child deserves the opportunity to play, interact, and enjoy the same experiences as their classmates.”
Mark Roper, chief commercial officer for Opterra, the Pittsburgh‑based firm developing the project, said the playground reflects the district’s commitment to holistic education. “It’s one of the reasons we’re so excited about this project. It reflects the district’s commitment to ensuring that every child has the opportunity to learn and also to play, connect, and thrive in school here,” he said.
Second‑phase plans
When the first phase is complete, the district will move into a second phase that expands office space, adds a new gym and band room, and removes the temporary trailers currently on site. The old gym may be repurposed as a Title I room to support additional instructional services.
Renzi summed up the vision: “Today’s groundbreaking is a massive step forward as we transform this building into a place that matches the limitless potential of our present and future students of our district. I want to give thanks to the community that supported the project and the teams that worked to bring this vision to life.”
Timeline and next steps
Construction on the playground, new boilers, and a gas line—replacing the building’s former electric‑only heating—will begin by late November, according to Evans. Both phases are expected to be finished in a little over a year, delivering a modern, safe, and welcoming environment for Dunbar’s students.
Community impact
The renovation underscores the district’s dedication to providing quality education facilities in Connellsville, reinforcing the role of schools as community anchors. Parents, teachers, and local leaders expressed enthusiasm for the project, noting that updated infrastructure and inclusive play spaces will enhance both academic outcomes and quality of life for families in the area.
