NFL legend Drew Brees recently shared the story of his 2006 free agency on the ‘New Heights’ podcast. Brees revealed that a failed medical evaluation and a leap of faith led him to choose the New Orleans Saints over the Miami Dolphins.
A Failed Medical Evaluation
After suffering a severe shoulder injury in San Diego, Brees became a free agent in 2006. The Miami Dolphins, led by coach Nick Saban, were initially the front-runners to sign him. However, the Dolphins’ medical staff expressed concerns about Brees’ shoulder, giving him only a 25% chance of making a full recovery.
In contrast, the Saints, who had just hired coach Sean Payton, were willing to take a chance on Brees. Despite the city still recovering from Hurricane Katrina, the Saints rolled out the red carpet for Brees, making him feel like their top priority.
A Leap of Faith
Brees has said that his decision to join the Saints was not just about football, but also about being part of the city’s resurrection. He recalled seeing the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina, including a Chevy truck upside down in a living room, and feeling a sense of purpose in helping the city rebuild.
Brees’ decision ultimately paid off, as he went on to win a Super Bowl with the Saints in 2010. The Dolphins, on the other hand, traded for quarterback Daunte Culpepper, and Saban left for the University of Alabama to build a college football dynasty.
