Documentary ‘The Essence of Eva’ premieres on WETA, honoring Maryland singer Eva Cassidy

Washington‑DC viewers will have the chance to see The Essence of Eva, a documentary about Maryland‑born singer Eva Cassidy, when it airs on WETA this week. Produced by Irish filmmakers Alex Fegan and Malcolm Willis, the film offers a deep look at Cassidy’s life, her humble beginnings in Oxon Hill and Bowie, and the lasting impact of her music.

Local roots and a lasting legacy

Cassidy grew up in the Maryland suburbs, working by day at a nursery in Largo and singing with local bands at night. Though she never achieved commercial fame while alive, her powerful voice earned her a devoted following among those who heard her perform live. She died of skin cancer in 1996 at the age of 33, but her recordings have continued to resonate.

How the film came together

Fegan and Willis began the project after discovering how little information was publicly available about Cassidy, who was known for guarding her privacy. “We had a real interest in her music, but couldn’t find much because she was so private,” Fegan told WTOP from Ireland. The producers reached out to Cassidy’s family, who granted access to personal archives and gave their blessing for the film.

The documentary, released in July 2025, blends archival footage—including a now‑iconic 1996 Blues Alley performance—with a never‑before‑seen interview with Cassidy herself. It also features conversations with her parents, siblings, friends, bandmates, and music icons such as Chuck Brown, Sting and Mick Fleetwood.

Tributes from music legends

Fleetwood, founder of Fleetwood Mac, praised Cassidy’s talent, saying, “She had a thing around her which was magical. I’ve been around phenomenal lady singers, and she was extraordinary.” He recalled helping her early in her career by introducing her to industry contacts, only to find she resisted being boxed into a single genre.

Sting noted that Cassidy’s rendition of his song “Fields of Gold” inspired him to alter his own live performances, underscoring the depth of her interpretive skill.

Why the story matters today

Beyond celebrating a gifted artist, the film highlights a broader cultural theme: the value of staying true to one’s convictions over the pursuit of fame or wealth. “Eva’s higher values were authenticity and faithfulness to herself,” Fegan said. “That’s why we’re still talking about her now.”

For local audiences, the broadcast is a reminder of the rich musical heritage that springs from Maryland’s communities and the Washington‑DC region’s support of the arts.

How to watch

“The Essence of Eva” is scheduled to air on WETA throughout the week. It will also be available for streaming on the WETA+ platform and the PBS app, giving viewers multiple ways to experience Cassidy’s story.
