The Cincinnati Art Museum has opened a special exhibit honoring the late Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama, whose vibrant polka‑dot designs have become a global cultural touchstone. Titled All the Eternal Love I Have for the Pumpkins, the show runs through October 18 and includes a newly presented Infinity Mirror Room.

Infinity Mirror Room draws visitors into a world of color

The centerpiece of the exhibit is an immersive room lined with mirrors and filled with yellow gourds splashed in black polka dots. The reflective surfaces create the illusion of endless space, offering a peaceful, meditative experience. “You don’t realize where you are. When you’re in there, you feel like you’re transported somewhere else,” said Alexus, a museum visitor who attended the opening.

Local community reflects on Kusama’s legacy

Visitors expressed admiration for Kusama’s dedication to her craft. “I really love the idea that she just relentlessly loved something that feels really mundane, right? In America we only see pumpkins one part of the year, but for her it became a huge part of her life,” Alexus added.

Alison Ruzsa, another attendee, praised the artist’s work ethic: “I think she led an exemplary life. Hats off to anyone who can get up every morning and make art like that.”

Collaboration with Dallas Museum of Art

The exhibit is presented in partnership with the Dallas Museum of Art and also features several pieces from Kusama’s permanent collection at the Cincinnati Art Museum.
