Two new wildfire starts over the weekend have reportedly burned about 600 acres near Devil’s Tower and restricted access to the national monument, according to Crook County officials.
Fire Details
Park staff confirmed Monday that people can drive up to the parking lot by the visitor’s center, but the trails are closed. The Left Creek Fire was first reported Saturday around noon southwest of the monument and grew to 282 acres. The Newton Fire near Devil’s Tower Cemetery was reported Sunday and grew to about 300 acres, according to the last National Interagency Fire Center update Sunday afternoon.
An alert to prepare for potential evacuation was downgraded to “ready” status Sunday night, according to Crook County Emergency Management. No word on containment, with over 100 firefighters on the fire and multiple assets, and the Devil’s Tower National Monument remains closed to the public to allow for fire operations.
