Detroit schools expand $1,000 perfect‑attendance incentive to middle schools

Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD) announced Tuesday that its Perfect Attendance Pays incentive will now include middle‑school students for the 2026‑27 school year. The program, which began two years ago for high‑schoolers, provides up to $1,000 in gift cards or cash equivalents to students who attend every school day during the winter attendance window, Jan. 5 through March 20.

How the program works

High‑school students continue to earn up to $100 per week in gift cards, with a seasonal cap of $1,000. For middle‑schoolers, parents of eligible students will receive a $50 gift card for each five‑day cycle in which their child records perfect attendance. Eligibility is calculated weekly, and the incentive is only applied to days counted in the regular school calendar—not fall or spring count days.

Funding source

DPSCD officials emphasized that the incentive is not financed by taxpayer dollars or standard state education aid. Instead, the district uses interest earned on funds earmarked for future facility projects. “Federal and state revenue is not used to fund the incentive,” a district spokesperson told Fox News Digital.

Impact on chronic absenteeism

District data show a measurable decline in chronic absenteeism since the program’s inception. In the 2024‑25 school year, Detroit recorded a 60.9% chronic absenteeism rate, defined as missing 10% or more of school days (18 or more days). After the incentive began, high‑school chronic absenteeism fell seven percentage points two years ago and an additional two points last year. DPSCD credits the program for helping the district rank in the 90th percentile nationally for reducing chronic absenteeism, according to the Education Recovery Scorecard released by Harvard and Stanford.

Why attendance matters

District communications stress that consistent attendance is linked to academic achievement. Students who miss 18 days or fewer per year are three to five times more likely to be at or above grade level. The district’s Facebook post urged families to support the effort, saying, “Families, your support is essential. Help your student take advantage of District resources and remove barriers to consistent attendance.”

Broader context

Detroit’s approach mirrors a growing trend among urban districts nationwide, which are experimenting with direct financial incentives, rideshare vouchers, and community outreach to address post‑pandemic attendance drops. While the program’s funding model avoids using taxpayer money, critics elsewhere have raised concerns about the long‑term sustainability of cash‑based attendance rewards.

For parents and community members, the expanded program offers a tangible way to encourage regular school attendance while providing modest financial relief. DPSCD will monitor the initiative’s results throughout the winter term and report outcomes before the next school year.
