The American Red Cross Temporary Shelter at Hoyt Middle School in Des Moines is continuing to help people displaced by the floods that occurred on July 3. Staff members say their focus remains on meeting immediate needs and helping residents transition into more permanent living situations.
Shelter Operations
According to Emily Holley, Nebraska/Iowa American Red Cross representative, the shelter has served as many as 60 people during the crisis, providing support through what officials described as a very difficult time. At present, 30 people remain there and are still receiving assistance.
Holley said the shelter will remain open as long as it is needed. Meanwhile, work continues at Parkside East Apartments, where crews are trying to make the complex livable again for residents displaced by the flooding.
Cleanup efforts have focused on removing mud, damaged drywall, and other materials affected by water. The goal is for second- and third-floor residents to return next month, with August 1 being the target date.
