Santa Barbara Downtown Master Plan

Santa Barbara’s downtown area, particularly State Street, has been going through a transition for the last six years. The area has faced challenges such as high rents and online shopping trends, which have affected local businesses.

New Master Plan

A new master plan has been designed to revitalize the area and bring back vibrancy and revenue. The plan has been months in the making, with city staff members putting in countless hours to create a workable and flexible plan.

City Master Planner Tess Harris has brought together various groups and influential business and community leaders to be part of the plan. The design aims to balance the city’s historic image with the needs of current and future uses, including how people move about, park, and use public spaces.

Concerns and Challenges

Some city leaders have expressed concerns about reckless bike riders, who they say have a negative impact on the economy and safety. Councilmember Kristen Sneddon has called for immediate action to address the issue, stating that it could jeopardize the entire master plan.

Other concerns include the presence of illegal food and retail vendors, which have caused damage to city property and affected local businesses. The city has recently increased enforcement, but some vendors still operate without permits.

Despite the challenges, many business owners and residents are optimistic about the new master plan and its potential to bring back life to the downtown area. Robin Elander, Executive Director of the Downtown Santa Barbara Improvement Association, has called for the city to move forward with the plan and find common ground on changes.
