A large plume of black smoke rose along East 17th Avenue in Denver late Wednesday afternoon. It was apparently caused by a fire on the roof of a local restaurant’s kitchen and was quickly extinguished.
The plume originated near Sherpa Base Camp, a restaurant, around 3:30 p.m. Its staff and patrons were completely unaware of the plume until a neighbor rushed over to tell them.
“We couldn’t see anything from inside — no flames, nothing. And then we ran outside and we saw the smoke coming out,” said Sonali Kc, the owner of the Indian restaurant. The smoke seemed to come from the roof above the restaurant’s kitchen, she said, but there was no sign of smoke inside the building.
The business was planning a grand reopening under the Sherpa name in just two weeks. It was formerly known as Curry & Grill 2.
Afterward, firefighters could be seen climbing on a rooftop attached to Sherpa. It was not immediately clear whether anyone was injured.
