DEA Warns of Fentanyl Dangers After Incidents in New Mexico

In recent weeks, New Mexico has witnessed two alarming incidents involving fentanyl, underscoring the growing threat of this potent drug. On May 20, a wellness check in Mountainair led to the tragic deaths of three individuals and the hospitalization of nearly 20 first responders due to fentanyl exposure. Just days later, on June 1, a similar incident in Silver City resulted in one death and sent 10 first responders to the hospital, with fentanyl again suspected as the cause.

DEA’s Response and Safety Measures

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has been actively involved in responding to these incidents, deploying their mobile lab to assist state and local officers in collecting samples and cleaning up the scenes. Jeffrey Castillo of the DEA expressed his concern, stating, “I’d never seen something to this extent before. You know, I mean, that many people being impacted.”

To safeguard first responders, the DEA has demonstrated equipment and shared safety advice. Castillo emphasized the importance of wearing protective gear, including long sleeves, gloves, N95 masks, and glasses, to prevent exposure.

Fentanyl’s Hidden Dangers

DEA officials have warned that fentanyl is increasingly being mixed with other drugs, often without users’ knowledge. This dangerous combination can lead to unintended overdoses. Castillo highlighted the risks, explaining, “Where a person thinks they’re taking a stimulant, cocaine, but then unfortunately it will have fentanyl mixed into it. And that can cause a, that’s a, that’s a recipe for disaster.”

The DEA continues to work diligently to address the flow of drugs into New Mexico and to educate communities about the risks associated with fentanyl and other substances. These efforts are crucial in preventing further tragedies and ensuring the safety of both users and first responders.
