DEA urges Colorado parents and teachers to warn students about fentanyl risks as school year begins

As Colorado schools prepare for the new academic year, the Drug Enforcement Administration’s Rocky Mountain Field Division (RMFD) is reminding parents, teachers and community leaders that the synthetic opioid fentanyl remains a lethal threat on campuses and in neighborhoods.

Online ordering and emoji codes

DEA officials say illegal drug dealers are using smartphone cash‑app services and coded emoji messages to conceal fentanyl purchases. The agency released a list of common symbols that have been linked to drug orders, urging adults to monitor children’s phone activity and to discuss the dangers of illicit substances.

Fentanyl seizures and highway corridors

Earlier this year the RMFD reported seizing roughly one in six fentanyl pills nationwide, with the majority of those seizures occurring in Colorado. Interstate 25 and Interstate 70 have been identified as primary transportation corridors for the drug, prompting law‑enforcement agencies to increase patrols and interdiction efforts along those routes.

Rising overdose deaths

Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show a 14 % increase in fentanyl‑related deaths in Colorado over the past year. Acting Special Agent in Charge Miguel Chino warned that even a half‑pill taken at a party or on school grounds can be fatal, emphasizing that “fentanyl knows no boundaries.”

What families can do

DEA representatives recommend several steps for parents and educators:

  • Talk openly with children about the risks of illicit drugs, especially synthetic opioids.
  • Monitor social‑media activity and be alert for unfamiliar emoji usage that could signal drug ordering.
  • Secure cash‑app accounts with strong passwords and two‑factor authentication.
  • Report suspicious activity to local law‑enforcement or the DEA’s tip line.

School districts across the state are also reviewing safety protocols, including random bag checks and increased counseling resources, to address the growing concern.

Community response

Local faith‑based groups and parent‑teacher associations have expressed support for the DEA’s outreach, noting that protecting children aligns with both family values and constitutional rights to safety and parental guidance. Several churches plan to host informational sessions for families during the upcoming weeks.

The DEA’s reminder comes as part of a broader national effort to curb the opioid crisis, but the agency stresses that Colorado’s unique position as a transportation hub makes local vigilance especially critical.
