Oklahoma Democratic Senate Runoff: Jim Priest vs. N’Kiyla “Jasmine” Thomas

Oklahoma voters will head to the polls on Aug. 25 to decide which Democrat will appear on the November ballot for the U.S. Senate. The runoff pits Jim Priest, a longtime attorney with experience in civil‑rights law, nonprofit leadership and ministry, against N’Kiyla “Jasmine” Thomas, a registered nurse, military spouse and mother who says her personal experience reflects the everyday challenges of working‑class Oklahomans.

Candidate backgrounds

Priest emphasizes his legal training and work in the nonprofit and ministerial sectors as the foundation for his problem‑solving approach. “Understanding civil rights and constitutional law, combined with daily exposure to people’s needs, makes me a better problem solver,” he told voters.

Thomas highlights her career in health care and her life as a military family. “I have lived here my whole life, grown up in southern Oklahoma, and have been exposed to different cultures and livelihoods,” she said. “We need someone in the Senate who can absolutely relate to the everyday Oklahoman.”

Policy priorities

Both candidates say health care, education and the state economy are top concerns, but they differ on emphasis. Priest frames affordability as the primary issue, arguing that the federal government must address cost pressures that affect the working class.

Thomas places health care at the center of her platform. She supports a Medicare‑for‑All system and urges Washington to focus on rural hospital closures, nurse burnout and physician shortages that threaten access for Oklahomans.

Approach to bipartisan cooperation

Priest says trust is the starting point for working across party lines. “Whether you’re a Republican, Independent or Democrat, you need to vote for a person you can trust to make right decisions,” he explained, noting that Congress is a representative body, not a direct‑vote forum for every bill.

Thomas says she looks beyond party labels. “I don’t even see the letters of parties when I’m talking to people. It’s about what the people want and how we can address that effectively,” she said.

What’s at stake

The winner of the Democratic runoff will face Republican U.S. Representative Kevin Hern, the party’s nominee, in the November general election. Oklahoma has not had a Democratic senator since David Boren left office in 1994, making this race a rare opportunity for the party to regain a seat in the Senate.

Voters are encouraged to review each candidate’s record, attend any remaining candidate forums, and cast their ballots on Aug. 25. The outcome will shape Oklahoma’s voice in Washington for the next six years.
