De Soto, Kansas, is considering a second data center, this one nearly four times larger than the first. The proposed data center, to be built by Digital Realty, would span over 1,400 acres at Astra Enterprise Park.
Concerns Among Residents
Residents have expressed concerns about the data center, including water usage, noise levels, pollution, and the potential drain on the power grid. Some have also questioned the lack of research on the long-term effects of data centers on the health of the community.
Digital Realty representatives have stated that the company has over 20 years of experience building and operating data center facilities and has a goal of being transparent in their development process. The company has also highlighted its sustainability efforts, including the use of renewable energy at many of its facilities.
Despite these assurances, many residents remain opposed to the data center, citing concerns about the impact on the community. De Soto resident Jennifer Sharp spoke out against the data center, stating that the city does not need it and that it should be stopped.
The proposal is still in the early stages, and Digital Realty has not yet submitted a formal application to the De Soto Planning Commission. If approved, the data center would be one of several in the area, with others already proposed or under construction in nearby cities.
