Daytona Beach family honors Army Staff Sgt. Deonte Davis after Fort Knox tragedy

Daytona Beach – The community is coming together to honor Staff Sgt. Deonte Davis, a 27‑year‑old native who lost his life in a motor‑pool incident at Fort Knox, Kentucky, on Sept. 1. Davis had been stationed at Fort Knox since 2024, serving as a bridge crew member with the 19th Engineer Battalion, 20th Engineer Brigade, XVIII Airborne Corps.

Family remembers a hero

“This still seems unreal because Tuesday makes one week already,” said Larissa Beamon‑Massey, Davis’ mother. “My baby was a hero.” The sentiment was echoed by his brother, David Harris, who recalled growing up with Deonte as the youngest of three brothers in Daytona Beach. “He loved what he did,” Harris said, noting his son’s dedication to both his faith and his country.

Service and honors

During his seven years of military service, Davis earned a distinguished record of awards, including the Army Commendation Medal, two Army Achievement Medals, two Army Good Conduct Medals, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korea Defense Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, and the Overseas Service Ribbon. Friends and fellow soldiers described him as a dependable teammate who always put the mission first.

Community response

Since the news of his passing, Daytona Beach residents have flooded the family with messages of love and condolences. “Just looking at messages from so many people who have so many positive things to say or just want to send their love and condolences—it’s an impact,” Harris said, expressing gratitude for the outpouring of support.

Plans for a memorial

The Davis family is in the early stages of planning a public memorial to celebrate Deonte’s life and service. While details are still being finalized, they intend to hold the ceremony in the coming days and will share information with the community as plans solidify.

Honoring service at home

Local churches, veteran organizations, and civic groups have already offered assistance, from providing meals to helping coordinate the memorial logistics. The outpouring reflects Daytona Beach’s strong tradition of supporting military families and honoring those who have given their lives for the nation.

As the family awaits the return of Davis’ remains, they continue to lean on the faith‑centered, family‑focused community that has long been a cornerstone of Daytona Beach life. Their story serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by service members and the enduring strength of a community that stands together in times of grief.
