Traffic jam on Lincoln Way as Ames drivers line up for 7 Brew Coffee’s limited‑edition squishy toy

Morning commuters in Ames experienced an unexpected delay on Lincoln Way on September 8, 2026, after a promotional giveaway at the local coffee shop 7 Brew Coffee drew a sizable crowd. Video posted by resident Destiny Hyland shows a line of vehicles beginning at the intersection of State Avenue and extending westward to the shop, four blocks away.

Promotion sparks local buzz

7 Brew Coffee announced that the first 500 customers who purchased a beverage would receive a limited‑edition squishy toy. The novelty item, marketed as a collectible for families and students, quickly became the talk of the town, prompting drivers to detour from their usual routes to secure a toy for their children.

Hyland, who recorded the scene, said she waited about 15 minutes in the line before deciding to leave. “I love the coffee here, but the traffic was getting out of hand,” she told KCCI. “I guess everyone wanted a little something extra for the kids.”

Impact on traffic flow

City traffic monitors reported that the backup extended roughly three blocks, causing a temporary slowdown for drivers heading toward downtown Ames and the Iowa State University campus. The Ames Police Department dispatched officers to the area to direct traffic and ensure safety, but no accidents were reported.

Local officials noted that while the congestion was brief, it highlighted the need for businesses to coordinate promotional events with the city’s traffic management plans, especially during peak commuting hours.

Community response

Many Ames residents expressed enthusiasm for the giveaway, noting that the squishy toys added a fun, family‑friendly element to their morning routine. “It’s a small thing, but it brings a smile to the kids and gets people out of the house,” said longtime Ames resident Mark Jensen, who stopped by after the line cleared.

Other community members raised concerns about the temporary inconvenience, urging businesses to consider the broader impact on traffic. “We love supporting local shops, but we also need to keep our streets moving smoothly,” said city council member Lisa Patel.

Looking ahead

7 Brew Coffee plans to host additional promotions later this year, including a seasonal drink launch in October. The shop’s owner, Jenna Morales, said future events will be scheduled with input from city officials to minimize disruption.

In the meantime, drivers are encouraged to use alternate routes such as Oak Street or the University Avenue corridor during peak times, especially when popular local businesses announce special offers.
