In a recent interview, comedian David Spade shared a fascinating tidbit about his early career in Hollywood. Before he became a household name through his work on ‘Saturday Night Live’ and ‘Just Shoot Me!’, Spade auditioned for the role of Joey Gladstone on the beloved 1990s sitcom ‘Full House.’ The role ultimately went to Dave Coulier, who became known for his comedic antics alongside the Tanner family.
Spade recounted his experience during an installment of Esquire’s “What I’ve Learned” video series. He described the audition process, recalling a scene where Joey struggled with laundry. Despite his efforts, Spade admitted he didn’t come close to landing the role. Reflecting on the experience, he noted the challenges of not securing roles and how it affected him mentally at the time.
Interestingly, Spade also mentioned he nearly landed a role on the police procedural ‘In the Heat of the Night,’ which could have taken his career in a completely different direction, away from comedy. Instead, Spade’s big break came with his stint on ‘Saturday Night Live’ in the early 1990s, setting the stage for his successful career in comedy.
Dave Coulier, who eventually played Joey Gladstone, also had an interesting journey to his role on ‘Full House.’ During auditions, he was asked to read for the role of Danny Tanner, which ultimately went to Bob Saget. Coulier shared that he even contributed to the character’s name, suggesting ‘Joey Gladstone’ to the show’s creator, Jeff Franklin.
These anecdotes from Spade and Coulier offer a glimpse into the unpredictable nature of casting in Hollywood and how different paths can lead to unexpected successes.
