Trump Urges Judge to Dismiss Lawsuit Blocking White House Security Upgrades

President Donald Trump has issued a stark warning regarding the obstruction of a $400 million project to enhance security at the White House, which includes the construction of a ballroom and a rooftop drone base. Trump directly addressed U.S. District Judge Richard Leon, urging him to dismiss a lawsuit that he claims jeopardizes national security.

Security Concerns and Legal Challenges

Trump’s comments, posted on Truth Social, emphasize the importance of the proposed ‘DronePort’ at the White House Ballroom, which he describes as potentially the most sophisticated in the world. The president argues that this facility is crucial for safeguarding Washington, D.C., against modern threats.

The lawsuit in question was filed by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, a nonprofit organization, which opposes the project on grounds of historical preservation. Judge Leon had previously ruled that Trump lacked the legal authority to proceed with the construction without congressional approval, leading to an injunction halting the above-ground construction of the ballroom.

Government’s Push for Project Continuation

The Justice Department, supporting Trump’s stance, has pressed for the injunction to be lifted, citing recent security threats, including a shooting outside a White House checkpoint. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche emphasized the urgency of the situation, arguing that the lawsuit, brought by a ‘serial plaintiff,’ should be dismissed to prevent further risks to national security.

Despite these arguments, the National Trust for Historic Preservation remains steadfast in its opposition, maintaining that the project would significantly alter the historic White House complex.

Project Details and Implications

The proposed 90,000-square-foot ballroom would include a rooftop drone base and a six-story underground military complex, complete with a hospital and research facilities. Trump has highlighted the project’s advanced security features, such as titanium fencing, hardened roofing, and impenetrable steel construction, designed to withstand direct attacks.

While the appeals court has temporarily allowed construction to continue, the broader debate over presidential authority, security spending, and historic preservation remains unresolved. Judge Leon has yet to rule on the Justice Department’s latest request to dissolve the injunction and dismiss the case.
