Red Cross Urges Blood Donations as Summer Brings Increased Need

With summer just around the corner, the American Red Cross is calling on residents to donate blood as the need for donations rises. The warmer months often lead to more outdoor activities, which unfortunately can result in a higher number of accidents and injuries. Despite this increased need, the Red Cross reports a decline in donor turnout during this time.

Local Impact and Call to Action

Ellen Gorham, executive director of the Greater Triangle area chapter of the American Red Cross, emphasized the urgency of the situation. “Right now what we’re seeing is a donor shortage, and we’re anticipating if people don’t sign up to donate in the weeks ahead, we will absolutely be in a blood shortage later this summer,” she stated. The period between Memorial Day and Labor Day is particularly concerning, with a noted 30% rise in teen-involved deadly crashes.

Gorham reassures potential donors that the process is straightforward and quick, taking less than an hour. “The most difficult part is probably right when you sit down, but otherwise it’s a great experience,” she added. The Red Cross stresses that donating now could save lives later, especially for patients in critical need, such as mothers experiencing complications during childbirth.

How to Help

The Red Cross is urging individuals to step forward and donate blood to ensure that hospitals have the necessary supplies to handle emergencies. Those interested in contributing can find more information and sign up at RedCrossBlood.org.
