CIBOLA COUNTY, N.M. — A man surrendered to Cibola County Sheriff’s deputies on Sunday in connection with a homicide that was reported over the weekend. Officials say the suspect turned himself in to authorities following the report.
Deputies identified the man as David Thomas Byington and placed him under arrest for the fatal incident near the Candy Kitchen and Pinehill areas. Earlier in the inquiry, deputies had also taken a woman, Tonia Byington, into custody as part of the same investigation.
Officials have released only limited information about the case, and it is not yet clear when the homicide occurred. Law enforcement noted that David Thomas Byington left the scene in a Ford Ranger pickup before later surrendering to deputies.
Byington is now facing an open count of murder. No additional charges have been announced at this time as the case moves through the initial stages of the criminal process.
The investigation remains active and ongoing as deputies continue to gather evidence and develop the case. Authorities have not provided further details pending the outcome of that work.
