Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) announced today that it has received a $70 million grant from the Federal Transit Administration (FTA). The competitive award will fund the purchase of 53 new light‑rail vehicles to replace the aging fleet that has been in service for more than three decades.
Federal support fuels local modernization
The grant represents 42 % of the total federal funding available for rail‑vehicle replacement and makes DART one of only three transit agencies nationwide to receive a share of the $166 million FTA program. The other recipients are Pittsburgh Regional Transit and the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA).
Agency officials said the new vehicles will improve performance, increase service reliability and strengthen the overall resilience of the transit system. Riders can also expect a smoother, more comfortable ride as DART prepares for current demand and future growth across North Texas.
Transform program moves forward
The vehicle replacement is a cornerstone of DART Transform, a ten‑year, $7 billion modernization initiative aimed at updating passenger facilities, system infrastructure, resiliency measures and rolling stock. The broader effort seeks to keep DART a regional mobility provider for the 12‑city service area that includes Dallas, Addison, Carrollton, Cockrell Hill, Farmers Branch, Garland, Glenn Heights, Irving, Richardson, Rowlett, Plano and University Park.
“This grant award complements the $25 million U.S. DOT Build grant we received earlier this summer for platform modifications in anticipation of the new light‑rail fleet,” said Trey Walker, DART interim executive vice president and chief development officer. “The grants generously awarded by the FTA support our Transform program and allow DART to reinvest in aging infrastructure to ensure safe, reliable, and innovative transit options for the coming decades.”
Procurement and financial planning
DART has already begun the procurement process, issuing a request for proposals to manufacturers. The vehicle purchase is incorporated into the agency’s 20‑year financial plan, and the federal award is expected to positively influence procurement timelines and delivery schedules.
With more than 171 000 passengers traveling on DART’s light‑rail, Trinity Railway Express, regional rail, bus routes, GoLink on‑demand service and paratransit each day, the upgrade is poised to benefit a broad cross‑section of North Texas commuters, families and businesses.
What this means for local riders
For daily commuters, the new cars promise fewer breakdowns and more on‑time service, especially during peak hours. For families, the modernized fleet offers a safer, more comfortable environment for children and seniors alike. And for the broader community, the investment underscores a commitment to sustainable, region‑wide mobility that supports economic growth and quality of life.
DART’s leadership emphasized that the grant is a testament to the agency’s proactive approach to maintaining and improving essential public‑transportation services. As the procurement process moves forward, residents can look forward to a next‑generation light‑rail experience that aligns with the region’s expanding needs.
